Plastic tube on back of steering wheel....

I have an 89 Cobia Odyssey 23' with a 225hp merc i/o, alpha 1, i noticed under the dash attached to the steering wheel / control box there is a clear plastic tube with a blue cap on it, is this for some type of lubrication system that the steering box might need from time to time?

When you say "attached" do you mean it's attached with a fitting to the control box or just ty-wrapped on?

i mean its attached to the control box, like if you filled the tube, it would empty into the control box.

Turn the steering wheel and look at it - see if the cable slides into it.

Then that is just a tube for the cable to park itself into. I don't believe any maintenance is needed for those. I could be wrong. If so, someone will correct me soon! ;)

It keeps the end of the inner cable clean.

It is a sleeve to cover the spent end of the cable which slides in and out of the gearbox as you steer. It prevents the cable from getting tangled up with any wires and stuff that might be back there.

thanks for the pic, thats exactly what i have....i didnt realize it protected the cable, thanks so much for keeping the mercruiser mechanic begging for money i don't have, hehe! you guys are awesome
