help!!! 1974 mercury 4HP impeller change...

hi all
i tried to lower the unit to change the impeller for it... open 2 bolts, 1 on top and 1 below the plate... still the lower unit won't come out.... am i missing any thing?... i have manual for 115hp not 4hp... so i thought it's should be the same right? other thing is there's a plate next to the piston(powerhead)... is the impeller in there? any though will appreciated...

on mine there was a rod that changed from froward to neutral and reverse that ran the whole length from just under the carb to down past the waterpump into the foot where all the gears are. make sure you are disconnecting that rod. that was my mistake and i almost hurt it

how do you take that rod off? i have no room on top to remove the shift grear plus the rod is inside and i can't even see it along shaft....
