so i thru my fat fifty in a tank of water yesterday and ran it for ten minutes or so at idle and checked the temperature of the water spitting out the exhaust relief boot using a meat thermometer. it was only about 125 and i believe its supposed to be 140? is that an acceptable engine temp running at idle?

Re: 125 degrees F at idle?

With a good water pump those motors will stay in recirculation mode at idle (not hot enough to open the thermostat). Sounds like you have a good water pump.

In fact, even at higher speeds the thermostat will repeatedly cycle open and shut as required to maintain temp. It is not an either/or deal.

Edit: Not sure that checking the exhaust water is an accurate indicator of powerhead temp anyhow. But it's probably close.

Is it possible that the thermostat has been removed and thus the lower temp? Try holding the thermometer on the head.
