Test Tank?

Anyone use a test tank to run their outboard at home?

I heard of folks using livestock watering tanks and they have various sizes at the local Tractor Supply here so, I was just wondering what size would I need to run a 45hp Merc at full throttle?

I used to run a little 3.5hp engine in a 55 gallon drum and it created quite a splash so, I can only imagine how much water my 45hp could splash out of a tank.

I just don't feel comfortable trying to work on the engine with it in the lake...I drop tools to often. ;-)

Re: Test Tank?

Now, dang it! I just did a search for "Test Tank" with no results before posting this and as soon as I posted, I get a list of similar posts that all have test tank in their titles.

<sigh> What am I doing wrong...sorry to waste your time.

Time not wasted, Sonny. Lots of folks with the same question won't use search.

45HP might be a bit much for even the 1,000gal. round tank, but if you turn the engine to the side it should just move the water around the sides, rather than over the side.

You might be able to get away with it if you use a test prop. But test props have some thrust also.
