Loss of power on 96 evinrude 48

First time poster here, hopefully someone who knows more about motors then me can help. I recently took my boat out for the first time this year and i had some issues. The motor is not idling right at all. It is very rough and it ultimately dies if you don't throttle up. When i do give it gas, the motor seems to be at about half power when it should be at full power and speed. I did not have this problem last year. When i started looking at the motor, i noticed there was some gas leaking out from around a little part that was on the bottom of the fuel pump. It had a red plastic thing on it and it looked like a stem from a tire or something, maybe to bleed the fuel line. I really don't know. I do know that it is leaking from around there. So i guess my question is could all of my problems be caused by this leak? And if so, would i have to replace the entire fuel pump or just that little piece? the item you are describing is the primer solenoid, it replace the choke butterfly in the carborator. when you press in the key in the on/start position, the primer allows fuel into the intake manifold, the enrich the fuel/air ratio. helping to start the motor. if it is leaking, 99% it is letting fuel into the intake also, flooding the motor at higher speeds, because the fuel pressure increases at higher revs. there is a rebuild kit for the primer, or replace it.

did you winterize your motor, use seafoam in your fuel, to keep the carb from gumming up. are you running new fuel.

here is a picture of a primer in the run position. also check hoses for cracks and leaks.

you probably only need part 6 gasket 341297 and part 13 O ring 331365, to see diagram, go here, look up 1995 48 ( diagram for 1996 is wrong) .

Thank you for your advice. I am running new fuel but i did not use seafoam this winter(i should have). So i assume the primer solenoid could be the cause of all my problems, am i correct in saying that? Also i don't believe the impeller has been replaced on my motor, would it be a good idea to change it as well just as a precaution. Thanks for the help again!

I have the same motor (91') and just got done doing a thorough cleaning of the carbs and it runs great so far but I still have to adjust the carbs.

The red lever on my fuel primer solenoid will spit a little fuel at start up, then stop. Is this normal??

the primer solenoid should not leak at all. you carbs have an adjustment screws PRESET at the factory, do not mess with it. if you do there is a long process to reset it. that is what the OEM manual says.

Fireson, if your impeller has not been changed in 10 years, consider yourself very lucky. 2 to 3 years is recommended. although there was just posted, a guy is changing his for the 1st time in 29 years. if the solenoid does not solve your problem, then i would look at throughly cleaning the carbs, and rebuild kits. try the solenoid first, then we will discuss the carbs.

Just curious, how hard would it be to install another impeller. Can i do this myself if im careful? Also if i didn't treat the gas before winter, whats the chances my carbs are gummed up? Thanks again, Seth

75% or more. the hardest part of changing the impeller is getting the shift linkage under the carb disconnected, and reconnected. the rest is just getting the 7 bolts that hold the lower unit, and 4 screws on the pump cover.

Well i guess i will deal with the solenoid first and then if i have to deal with the carb, i will get back to ya. Thanks for the help once again. Im going to go ahead and replace the impeller too. I just got the boat last year and im still learning about it. I dont know what i would have done if i didnt find these forums. Thanks again! Seth
