This is my first post. I registered today. I just started my old Johnson today after two years. It runs fine, but when I push in on the key to stop the motor, it won't stop. Do I need a new switch?

Say what? You turn the key to the off position to stop the motor. You push the key in (while turning to the "start" position) to choke the motor for cold startup.

My switch is designed to turn the motor off by turning left and pushing in to kill the motor. But when I push it in the motor won't die.

What outboard are we talking about here? Model number? Who wired this set up?

It's a Johnson Seahorse 1982 Serial # E5659129 J-35 ELCND
The Jonson Control Center was set up that way when I purchased the pontoon boat used 5 years ago. I just took it apart, and it appears to be the original switch. I am a sailboater, so I couldn't tell you if it's weird or not.
