Does anyone know if this motor is a "zero clearance" motor? ie, if timing belt breaks, will the pistons hit the valve?

Modern Gilmer belts are extremely durable and likely to way outlast their 60k replacement recommendation. If you choose to gamble and there is no potential harm done if you loose, then I would say it is a good bet. If not, then it is prudent to change it.

This is for my daughters car and they quoted her $400 to change the belt.

Re: Mitsubishi Lancer ES, 2003

my $ is to say that a timing belt break would crush valves
(interference is the word I believe?-)
don't know of many engines that aren't in the import variety ;)

Rather be safe than sorry when it comes to timing belts & $400 is reasonable.
(my truck is 1200 if I don't do it myself)
