 Ok, sorry for the stupid question... but there seems to be alot of discussion about batteries, so I don't feel so bad.

I am new to boating and do not know much about the battery/electrical system in a boat. I acquired a 91' Bayliner Capri 1700 with a 93' Johnson 70hp outboard.

My question is, I was thinking about adding a second battery. The boat currently has 1 battery. It is a cranking battery / group 24 / 500 cold crank amps / 625 marine crank amps / reserve 95. I am adding a new CD stereo and currently have an Eagle fishfinder, and of course the required lighting. I plan to use to boat and the stereo often.

How large is the alternator on my outboard? Do I need a second battery? What about chargers? The current battery is mounted in the bow and I don't think there is room there for another. Can I mount one seperatly in the rear and is that safe, since it would be next to the gas tanks? Sorry for all of the questions!!! If anyone can tell me what I need and what to do... and I will do it!!! THANKS!

Re: Yes... ANOTHER BATTERY QUESTION...

The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked! Whether you need a second battery or not is questionable in your situation. If your stereo does not have a gigawatt amp you can certainly get by running everything from a good sized starting or dual purpose (starting/deep cycle) battery, especially if you have limited room. I do question the start battery being located at the front of the boat however. Normally the start battery is located close to the engine but it may have been moved up front to better balance the boat. There is nothing inherently wrong with locating a battery next to the fuel tank so long as there is no sparking going on so make sure connections are clean and tight and that all wiring is properly routed and supported to prevent damage. As for battery size, you might want to step up to a single group 27 dual purpose of the highest capacity you can find if you have issues with the current setup. If boat on big water, a second battery would be desired but you can always carry a jump start pack to get you going if necessaryt.
