super thunder-bolt 50 hp lower unit

The lower unit has a long shaft with a cracked housing. I found a unit but it has a short shaft. Can anyone tell me if these are interchangable and is it a big job? Its a 73 mod..

Earlier long and short housing were differant so there is not much chance they will.
