I just purchased a boat with a Mercury 45hp. classic 50 and noticed that it does not have an air cleaner or screens on either of the two carberators, is that standard or am I mssing them. If I am supposed to have an air cleaner does any one know where I can get an used one? Thanks Al

There should be a silencer (air box) over the carbs but there is no air filter or screen. Not much dust and debris on the lake.

most the inline classics in the 40-50 range did not run airboxs, filters or screens.
most boating is done in non-dusty areas, if dust is an issue check your depth sounder/GPS.
some of the older ones had a bug screen in front but two strokes typically dont use an airfilter in the marine industry, some used an airbox to aide in diminishing reed noise.
we just finnised an older 90 inline that someone made bug screens out of 1/8mesh screen.
I would not go any finer, especially if it uses backdrag type carbs.

Mercury 44 cu. in. engines, it does not matter what the were tagged 50-45-40HP and model 500s never had a filter, silencer or screen of any type on their carbs.
