# of electronics per battery?

I have a 16ft boat, I was going to buy a 40 pound thrust trolling motor and another battery. The battery in the boat has 85 minutes of reserve capacity and runs the fish finder and radio as well starts the 40hp motor. I was thinking of buying a battery with 160 minutes of reserve capacity. Should all the electronics run off of the large battery and use the smaller battery for just starting? Or run everything off one battery and have the other for backup. Any suggestions? How long would I be able to troll with the trolling motor on the large battery? What do all the other anglers use for a set-up. Thanks

I have a 14' boat with 40hp. I run the trolling motor on a seperate deep-cycle group 27 battery. Everything else runs off the marine starting/deep cycle battery. I think its a group 24. I have just switched to a bow mount trolling motor. A bow mounted fishfinder whose transducer is on the trolling motor will run off the trolling/deep-cycle battery, just for convience sake.

If the trolling motor battery gets run down, I'd never run the starter with it. Soon you would be without any power. On mine, if I happen to run the starter down, also have recoil start on the 40hp. If I didn't have that, would carry a short jumper cable.

your trolling motor should be off a separate deep cycle battery, fish finders etc use very little power these days. no if you have a radio and amp. that will kill a battery pretty quick.
