I have a 2004 merc 40hp. All was fine, maxed out at 5500 rpm, when the motor just dropped to 3000 rpm, with throttle wide open. In neutral, I can redline it, with a load, however, 3000 rpm is it. Checked fuel filter, etc. Anyone with similar problems, or potential answers? ButteNM

Re: stuck at 3000 rpm

If you mean reving it to 5500rpm sitting still, you run the danger of blowing your motor. I wouldn't do that.

If it's a 3 cyl. your probably only firing on two cyl. at 3000rpm with full throttle.. Same problem I had and it was caused by the top carb jet being blocked by varnish/gunk. I pulled the carbs and cleaned. Maybe not your problem, just a suggestion.

Re: stuck at 3000 rpm

PLEASE!
never red-line in neutral.
I did it! and got lucky, it only snapped the drive shaft to the lower unit,
that was before I found this forum! about $600.00 to repair

I agree with Laotzu, clean the carbs,

also check your plugs, I'm not sure but I think that motor has only one control box, so, the stator should be fine, maybe a coil or control box, check the basics first, compression, fuel, and spark
