Default 1987 4 HP Evinrude - Help with water pump replacement?

Hi,

Evinrude Model: 44RCUD
S/N: B1374707

New to the forum. I'm a torpedo mechanic, and long time auto mechanic, but this is my first time doing ANY maintenance on an outboard marine motor. I was given this 4hp Evinrude by my father and it seems to be in great shape. I drained and refilled the lower unit with correct oil, and replaced the two sparkplugs which were pretty gunked up from lack of use/maintenance.

After replacing the plugs, the motor starts right up.
Unfortunately, I don't see ANY coolant water peeing from behind the head like with most motors. I plan to pick up the impellar replacement kit today and do the job.

A few questions for you veterans....

1. Where exactly IS the coolant water pee hole on this motor so I can check for clogs?
2. Am I removing the lower unit, or just the two bolts that secure the prop to the lower unit? If its the lower unit, where are those bolts located?
3. Also, is there a fuel filter screen within the carb?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

First off, Welcome to iboats!

1. Your motor doesn't have a 'tell tale' or pee stream. Water and exhaust is expelled from a small opening on the midsection behind a baffle cover. If you can hold your finger on the head , while running, for a few seconds, it's cooling. It's best to replace the water pump impeller anyway if you don't know for sure when the last replacement was done.. Document the date when you replace it and then you'll have a baseline on future maintenance.
2. Nope, leave the 2 bolts that secure the prop to the lower unit alone. Look for 2 bolts, one under the cavitation plate, the other forward nose of lower unit. Remove both.
3. No carb filter IN the carb. If you have intergral fuel tank, there's a filter screen in the tank, same for the external tank.

Excellent. Thanks for the quick reply.
Heading out to pick up the kit now and I'll get started. Should I use any sealant with the housing bolt reassembly or the lower unit bolts, or am I better off with just anti-sieze?

PS - The motor doesnt get too hot (i.e. you could leave your hand on top of it as long as you wanted.) Could you explain more specifically where this: "Water and exhaust is expelled from a small opening on the midsection behind a baffle cover" is?

Non-copper based anti-seize should be fine. The idle exhaust relief port is on the rear of the midsection. The port itself is covered with a port cover held on with one screw. This port relieves back pressure on the motor at idle and should spit both exhaust gases and cooling water at idle. When in gear and underway, exhaust from this port will lessen as the exhaust will be pulled through the midsection and expelled underwater along with the motors cooling water....

Since the motor has been sitting unused for an extended period of time, you are wise to change the water pump. Too, you might consider taking a few minutes to read a couple topics in the frequently asked questions forum concerning additional maintanence on your "new" outboard. Here's a couple links I think you will find most interesting. BTW....... Welcome to iboats!!!

Also, I'm not certain you have the parts diagrams for the outboard. If not, you can take a look at some exploded diagrams, complete with part numbers, here. If you look at the "gearcase" subfolder, you will see the exploded diagram pertaining to the water pump assembly..............

.........Click here............ http://www.brp.com/en-US/Related.Products/Parts.htm

Now....... Under the "Parts Heading" click on "Visit the site now".

Next...... Click on the green check mark in the box located in the top left hand corner and select "View Parts Catalogs"

Now....... Click on the "Go" button beside the box, again in the upper left hand corner of your screen, that says "Evinrude". (Johnson owners need to change this to Johnson from the drop down menu first)

Now...... Select the appropriate folders for your year, horsepower, and model number to view the parts lists and exploded diagrams. Here, you will find that subfolder containing the "gearcase" diagram that I spoke of earlier.

Good luck to you................................ALAN

thanks to everyone for the quick helpful replies. I got it done in about 15-20 min last night. piece of cake. I noticed the new evinrude waterpump "pin" has changed to a plastic looking triangular instert....where as the original that I removed was a metal half-round pin.
