Hello, Im new to the board and boats for that matter and this is my first post. I just picked up a 1994 bayliner with a 3.0L mercruiser I/O. The boat sat for about 3-4 years, and unfortunately did not get properly winterized. The previous owner did remove the plug to let the water drain from the manifold. I put a new battery in and all I get is a click from the starter. I disconnected the alternator belt, and found the alternator to be frozen. I pulled each plug and sprayed a bunch of WD-40 and seafoam deepcreep into each cylinder.
Thats where I stand as of now. The motor looks very clean from the outside with no visible cracks. I am wondering how I can manually turn the motor over to get it broken loose. The owner said it ran smooth as silk when it was last run, and led me to believe there were no problems. Before I go choke this guy out and go to jail, can somebody offer me some help on how to get this motor to rotate? I assumed I would have some work to do, but a locked up motor does not sit well with me. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!
Welcome to iBoats. Lots of good folks running around here with lots more info than me. If you just want to turn the engine over, there is a bolt on the front of the harmonic balancer. Maybe 7/8" socket with a ratchet. Turn it clockwise with the plugs out. Then, we can go from there with any other work / issues.
I dont remember seeing any bolt on the balancer, it felt more like a hole in the middle. It is obstructed by the front motor mount though. I will check into it a bit deeper today since my temper got the best of me last night.
If the motor is currently seized and you are successful in unsticking it, you may as well remove it and rebuild it. It won't run long even if you do get it running.

hello,
i have seen stuck automotive engines, same as your's just a 6 and in a truck come back to life with careful unsticking procedures. took a while, but in the hands of a good mechanic it can be done. the engine ran for another 25,000 miles. u sound as if u have engine experience.
how long has it sat with the oils in cyls? if it was mine i would consider a plug hole adapter and put some compressed air into each cyl. will help to move oils around. i would use at least 100 psi.
then i would pull starter and use a BIG screwdriver or something suitable to leverage in between ring gear and housing. i would then start to apply pressure in the hopes of getting some rotation. i would be content to apply pressure many times, even if it did not want to rotate at first. i would not force it, but i would be determined.
generally, a stuck engine that has to come apart can be serviced well with a complete cleaning of individual parts and some fresh gaskets. etc. also if u do that, i would have a valve job done also. just use standard engine disassembly procedures and same to buttom it back up...
regards

I pulled the starter and found it was locked. The gear would snap in and out, but would not rotate. I replaced it and drained and refilled the gas and it fired right up. It didn't even tap a bit when it started.
Now I need to figure out why the trim is not working properly. It took a few seconds for it to do anything, then it finally started to lower. When I tried to raise it it only move up a little bit then stopped. I can hear it whining, almost like there is air in the line or something. Any suggestions?
I very much appreciate the help thus far in my quest.
