Hello everyone. I am new here. I was hoping I could get some advice here. I just bought my friend's boat since he just bought a new carolina skiff. It's a little 15' welded jon with a 1988 15 hp evinrude, model E15RCCS. The only issue I see with this motor so far is that the impeller is in need of replacing. Under power it has a weak stream of water ejecting from the back. It flows fine under forced pressure from the muffs with a hose. SO I am confident there is no restriction and therefore the issue is the impeller. I have ordered the complete water pump rebuild kit. Can anyone offer advice? What has me most concerned is that I can't seem to find anything regarding a seal or gasket that to me SHOULD be between the lower unit and the mid section. I don't see one on the evinrude parts list or drawings. Is there one? I would think there would be one between these two portions of the outter casing. I see on the drawings where the 6 bolts go (which I also ordered new ones) and I see where they attach but I don't see anything where the lower unit slides into the mid section. Am I missing something here? I haven't performed any disassembly yet so I am basing this completely on the evinrude drawings.

no seal there. Remember, this whole thing is supposed to sit in and be filled with water up past the lu.

Hi & welcome...

Congrat's on the new to you boat. Those are great motors. I have an '82 that idles down real smooth for trolling. They make good power for their compact size. Impeller on those is not tricky to do. Unless it is a saltwater motor, you probably didn't need to get new bolts for the LU. Here is a must read for you... it is from the FAQ forum here. Much good stuff in there.

I just did one on a 9.9 they are simple. You may also want to replace the seal on the impeller housing. On mine that was the culprit, water was leaking past a bad seal. With the parts diagram you should also be able to figure out how to disconnect the shift linkage, if it needs to be disconnected. On my 9.9 it did, but on 7.5 it did not.

Good luck and have a great day,

Rob.

Wow....thanks for the replies. I will "favorite" that link to the machinist pages. The boat is a suffiecient 1542 welded jon and it was used in fresh and brackish water through out it's life. I know the former owner (we work together) and he took care of it...always flushing it out and cleaning the carb. IN fact just before he bought his new boat, he had the carb checked out and rebuilt. The little motor starts cold on the 2nd or third pull and on the first pull after warm up. So hopefully I can install this with the help of my father-in-law and be good to go. Thanks for the help.
