Needing info so I can purchase this item.
I have two model numbers off of this motor, the first one is the number I took off the motor 20RL73A the part number I am looking for is 0317664
This is the part number the guy me who sold me the outboard.
18202R-E03578 the part number I am looking for here is 0316358.
It was my understanding that they had at one time changed the mid-section. I am now wondering if they just didn't move the power unit over to a different frame. Can someone help me cross reference this part. I have looked for hours on the net tring to do it.

The first model number given is for a 1973 20hp Johnson. 0317664 is the OMC part number for the steering bracket for that vintage. Visit here, http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=7dff75c008b4a99ba8fabf25fd11be8b It is part #80 under "Exhaust Housing". Follow the links on the left hand side to your particular model number. First you will need to switch the years to 'Johnson'. You will need to visit the dealer to get this item, or one of the salvage yards.

The second is for a 1972 18hp Evinrude. 0316358 is again the part number for the steering bracket for that motor. Visit the same link, only search under that model number. That part is available online, #80 again in the parts list under "Exhaust Housing". $125 USD.

Obviously, you have to first decide which motor you have--a 1972 Evinrude 18hp (18202R) or a 1973 Johnson 20hp (20RL73A). Once you figure that out, the rest should be easy. Here is a picture of the Evinrude 18. Especially note the color. If the part you need has been painted over, scrape a bit of paint off to see what the original color was.

For the life of my I can't remember why, or what they changed on the motor. I have emailed the seller, hoping to get answer soon. I was told allot of these parts are interchangable. Just wish I knew which ones or how to cross reference.

That part is easy.

The link I provided will answer that question. Simply check the part numbers and see if the are the same. If they are, they are interchangable. Clicking on the magnifying glass will show the superseeded numbers. Tks Ezeke for the tip!

If you are still unsure, there are some real guru's on this site that will be able to help you. A great bunch, FR being one of them.

Just heard from the last owner. It is my understanding that there was a problem with the transom mount. So they changed the mount to a Johnson mount. So I now believe that the housing is Johmson and the power unit is a Evinrude. Is this possible.

You don't know how much he changed. If only the transom brackets, that wouldn't affect the steering bracket. Check and compare the paint color!
