my 97 mariner 115 lost reverse. when you shift it into reverse the gears grind but they won't mesh. You can feel the grind in the shift lever (quicksilver 3000) but also hear it at the engine. Out of the water, when running, reverse works fine. Is the problem in the shifter or in the engine? Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Thanks for any help.

Did you do any maintenance to the motor such as replace the impeller or have the impeller replaced?

no work has been done to the engine recently. Reverse worked the first time out this year, but stopped working on the same outing. I'm going to adjust the cables to start then see what happens from there.
