Turn the key to RUN (not start) it should beep to indicate its working. If you want to check the overheat circuit, disconnect the tan wire and ground it (the wire going forward -- not the one from the sender). Again the alarm should sound with the key in run. You can't test the sender except with an ohmmeter. It is simply a temperature sensitive switch so with a cold engine it should read open circuit. If it reads closed circuit, the alarm should sound and with a cold engine, that would indicate the switch is bad. Putting the sender in hot water should cause it to close at its trigger temperature.
