hi

I have a 1988 Johnson 150HP V6 outboard. Does any one know if we should have a stream of water coming out of the exhaust ports that are just below the engine cover or should just gasses come out of them. At the moment when running at speed we have spits of water and steam coming out. Could this be a problem or is it just a poor fitting exhaust gasket allowing some water to leak into the exhaust chamber. We have a good strong tell tale which only gets luke warm at speed, it has had a new impellar fitted and the thermostats seem to be working fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

those are exhaust relief ports for when the motor is idling, and not enough pressure to blow the exhaust thru the prop. at speed the exhaust should go thru the prop. should not be steam. chek your plugs, for any of the looking especially clean (steam cleaned) could have a problem.

That is normal. You will get steam and misting comming out when you are using the muffs with the garden hose and when it is in the water or lake floating then you will get more water comming out of it when the thermostats open and close and also to keep the exhaust cool with the water. You should be good to go. Take care, Bob:)
