I have a 1965 650 on a 17' hydro swift and i can only reach about 30mph at 2500 rpm on the tach. is this right or should i be getting more speed out of it. i have tried a few things and got it running pretty good now but just can't get any more speed, or rpm out of it. it's kind of slugish taking off any help would be great.

You have the wrong prop on it, the engine shold be propped in the 5000 to 5200RPM range it will give it more power and should help on the speed however the speed is more dependent on the hull design

Actually, I'd guess you've either got a bad tach, or a bad setting on the tach, as there is NO WAY a 65hp turning 2500 RPM is going to push a 17-footer at 30mph. Fix the tach before messing with props...

I think that a 65hp on a 17 footer is pretty much doing about as much as it can at 30mph, and would assume you have an issue with the tach, or it's setting.

It might be a bit over propped and why it's slow out of the hole.

so would a smaller pitch on the prop give me more low end power per say, come up to full rpm a little faster?

Yes, BUT you could actually go OVER the top RPM. That's why you need to get the tach issue taken care of before you tinker with the prop...

The tach issue might be as easy as re setting the switch on the back of the tach itself.

I'd take a guess and say 12 pole setting if it has the setting option.
