removing the foot

Im taking the foot off of my 60 merc 300 and have been able to remove the nuts except for the one up in the exhaust. It looks like a 9/16 but the clearance around the nut is to tight for a socket. Any idea? Does it take a special tool? thanks

I think it is a 1/2 which would explain the tight clearance. It is on my 60. If you are talking about the one that holds the adjustable fin above the prop.

On my larger Mercs, I use a 1/2" 6 point socket on a 3/8" drive extension. You might try a 1/4" drive socket set. It iwll have narrow-wall sockets.
