Default 1980 Evinrude 4.5 water pump question

I picked up a very clean evinrude 4.5 yesterday from a local yard sale. The gentleman I bought it from said it had been gone through by a marine mechanic 5 years prior and only used once or twice a year since that time - take that for what it's worth. Here's the situation: When I run it in a barrel of water I get water spitting out of the upper exhaust and the engine stays cool, but there is no visible stream of water from a tell-tale hole. I can't even find a tell-tale hole on the motor! I've ordered a new impeller to be safe, but would like to take it out before it gets here. Does this motor have a tell-tale hole?? Should I be concerned at all since I am getting water out the upper exhaust and it is cool?

No telltale. Just water out the exhaust relief, as you are seeing...
At five years, you may wish to replace the impeller. For less than $20.00, it is cheap insurance for a really nice little motor.

Thank you Scott - I was starting to go crazy looking for the invisible telltale hole... Is there any trick to changing the impellor? (I don't have a service manual yet) Does it matter if its in F, N, or R to drop the lower unit? I've worked on Mercruiser alphas - but never an outboard. Thanks.

David

Your unit will just drop off with the removal of three bolts - one in front on top and two underneath the AV plate above the prop.

Pump housing will be on top of the unit. Be absolutely sure the o-ring is present on top of the driveshaft before reassembly and that the driveshaft splines are well greased.

Still, with that said, I'd still find a manual before getting into it...
