55 Johnson Fuel Starvation?

Hey there,
I have a 1979 55 Johnson. It idles perfectly, but when giving it gas it acts like it's not getting enough. It chokes down to ~10mph revving up and down periodically.

I have checked the fuel filter, it is clean. I was thinking about installing a new fuel pump. What confuses me is that here at the house with a hose hooked to it, it revs up all the way and seems to be fine. The problem only seems to be when in the water.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Kyle

Re: 55 Johnson Fuel Starvation?

On a flushette, the engine could rev to full throttle on one cylinder but it's not a good idea to do so. The engine is free wheeling and could (and usually does) throw rods thru the side of the crankcase!

Remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetors with new kits.

The above is assuming that you've checked and approved of the compression and ignition (spark). If not, do so, then let us know what you find.
