Hello All!

New addition to the family.. a 63 10hp QD-24B. Took apart the gearbox, and cannot seem to get the parts back into order.... There is a rectangular bump on the bearing part that goes closest to the prop, should it point up towards the motor, or down?

Also, i have been using marine grade grease on all of the gears and shaft in the gearbox and it seems to make the clutch assembly sort of grainy feeling when sliding on the shaft. not smooth... even after cleaning them both and re-greasing. should i use gear oil only and forget the grease?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and i would gladly provide pictures if necessary to get this gearbox back together!

This must be a brain test. I've had a zillion of those things apart and can visualize the "bump" you are speaking of. I THINK it points toward the top of the motor. You should be able to verify that by the stains on the bearing housing..match it with the contour of the gearcase.

Why are you using grease? Gear oil is what lives in there.

Ditto, no grease, just correct lower unit oil.

I take a closeup picture using a digital camara before removing the gears. That helps big time.
