Default 1969 85 hp evinrude lower unit

This is a 85hp model 85993e. I have a question about my lower unit, Its leaking a black oil, I took the prop off and clean out the inside of that casing and observed a rubber o ring or rubber washer in the back corner are peeking out(about 1 1/4-1/2 inch) inside where the allen wrench bolts in the rear of the casing , Is that suppose to be there or is this a real promblem, maybe a crack or something. or just a o-ring oveflow, I hope. I could use a diagram or something of this lower unit. I really need to know cause the evinrude dealer said they wont work on this 1969, but it runs great...Also how would i drop this lower unit properly

The following may help

I believe you are referring to your prop shaft seal. Checking the level of the lu oil will determine if you are in fact leaking. A milky white colour would indicate water intrusion, in which case you would need to pressure test to isolate the faulty seal or simply re seal all toghether. Be sure to replace the drain and vent screw gaskets when replacing the lu oil.

Your description says that it is the o-ring that goes around the diameter of the bearing housing, right? That absolutely should not be showing. The edge of the o-ring groove must be broken away for that thing to get out. Yes, removing the allen screws releases the bearing housing so it can slide out. Or, so it says in the book. Reality says that it might be a real bugger to get out. Is this a salt-water motor? That would account for the condition of the carrier.
