Default Engine cover needs insulation/soundproofing

The engine cover on this 1985 era Capri 1950 has lost all its sound proofing/inside insulation over the years. I know I read some threads about people installing a substitute material. Anybody completed that project and how good is the material? Thanks.

hi Jal,

... good question. i have been thinking this over also when i redo my cowling. the original black insulation is brittle and messy. things i thought to use.

1) foam that you find in shipping thats somewhat egg crate in shape but thicker and more dense. used primarily to protect expensive electronics. p/c's, etc. dont know the longevity however.

2) the black insulated matting you can find under older car hoods. its still available online and comes in pieces big enough to finish the inside of a cowling.

How to mount? I thought either glue the material directly to inside of cowling or j/b weld several thin ss bolts spaced evenly to the inside of cowling and impale the material through and hold with large washer and wax thread nut.

there is a sound deadening/insulation/heat reflective material that has aluminum on both sides and foam inbetween and can be found on ebay..."3in1 product" name but not sure who makes it. Guys on another forum used it and sprayed 3M hi temp glue to stick it on. The company on ebay that sells it is Cowboy AutoParts. If I can find the company that makes it I am going to try to find some locally. If not ebay isn't a bad price, and the roll has plenty for our purpose. If you find out who makes it let me know.

There is also the sound deadener used by the BOOM BOOM stereo car guys. Its used to stop the vibration of the body panels. Its thick rubber with a self stick side. It should take the heat of the engine compartment. Do a search for auto stereo suppliers and look at the sound deadener products.

I used this stuff called, Quite Car. It is a liquid, all you do is brush or paint it in the inside of your engine lid. Every coat sound deadens by 3 db. Worked great for me, no insulation to worry about and it is fire proof. Makes your engine lid alittle heavy tho.... It is kinda like a rubber coating
.... I do have alittle over a quart left if interested?

My cover is heavy enough as it is so I don;t want to add more weight. I am thinking about using styrofoam panels glued to the interior.
there is more than enough room in mine to clear all the engine parts.
any thoughts about using styrofoam? On another forum they talked about using the pink kind like you use in home insulation. It would be cheap and if it deteriorates you add more very easily. It is more for sound deadening than heat insulation on the engine cover.

In reference to the pink insulation - how do you plan on applying it? Styrofoam doesn't like glue - it just melts. Plain ole' gas will destroy it. Here's a link to some good material. Probably pricey ( remember it's boat stuff ), but pretty much top of the line:http://www.acoustiblok.com/marine.html.
Do a Google search for <marine insulation / engine> there's a bunch more.

The only thing I would recommend if you do decide to go with an automotive deadener. Do not get one that is asphault based, they melt and turn into a nasty pile of goo. It is pretty messy to clean up and I imagine cleaning chunks of asphault off your motor isn't your idea of fun. Look for one that is all rubber. They are a bit more expensive but lasts longer and no mess.

Go down to a A/C or contractor warehouse and tell them youre looking for the foam sheets that are used to cover Air conditioning pipes. the foam is about 3/4 inch thick and it has a self stick back. they come in big sheets
Thats what I would use

Rob I found something like that at Lowes, by Frost King. Works OK, adhesive is not good despite the spray on stuff I used so I threw some staples into it. We will see how it holds up. Price was right though.

To reduce sound you need to disrupt or keep the noise from transferring to the hull or engine cover. I used carpet pad as it takes spray on glue pretty well. Sandwiched a piece of lino in between two pieces of pad for a sound barrier and on the inside glued a layer of paper backed foil flashing. Not too expensive since a lot of the material was available on the jobsite. Reduced the noise of my jetboat by at least 3/4.
