On my 1976 johnson 115 alot of the bolts are rusty and Im replacing the steering arm. What is the best bolts to replace all the rusty bolts? I dont want to use something that may cause a bad reaction to the metal the outboard is made of.

Re: What Type Of Bolts To Replace Rusty Bolts

Mspring, You can source the bolts from a hardware store which will be much cheaper. You ned to match the length, size, thread and grade. On my Merc inline six, for example, the upper motor mount bolts were grade 8 steel, 7/16"X 6', fine thread. Merc wanted $12ea. I found them at the "Bolt Bin" for <$3 each.

Make sure you get the correct ones. BTW - Stainless steel bolts are not graded. They are about grade 5.

The OEM upper mount bolts for this specific application are $2.83 each.

Good information to know, I always thought stainless was stronger than grade 8's.

If you can find them and then afford them, use monel.
