I have a mid to late 60's mercruiser I am trying to put a knew bimbal bearing in it. I have the bearing but I have a few questions. I have a friend that is a mobile mechanic he said line the hole up in the bearing with the one on the case well there is no hole in the case. So he had never seen one with no way to grease the bearing there is no grease fitings to grease bearing anywere just the one one the top for the stearing. Any info would be great I was going to take the grease gun and pack the bearing through the hole beflore i put it in only way i see to do it thanks a lot. Joe

Re: Gimbal bearing install

I have a bunch of rings laying around, and i needed it for a job on an older unit.the one you have linked still has to be lined up on the tiny grease hole in the bearing.using the ring eliminates that issue as long as you dont put it in/on/after the welded area.

Re: Gimbal bearing install

you will need some type of tool . a grease gun needle wont fit in the hole of the bearing itself.you would atleast have to tap the hole in the outer race for a zerk fitting first, grease the bearing, then remove the fitting.

Re: Gimbal bearing install

that's a nice tool ya made bd. i agree. yers is better in the respect of not lining up the grease hole useing the cartrige grease slot....
23157, if ya don't have the grease fitting on the drive. ya've no choice but to go with something like bd's got. or something like the mercstuff tool.
btw. the cartrige and brg. are a matched set.....

Re: Gimbal bearing install

In the eariliar service manuals, merc actually said that if the bearing has not spun in the race ,the bearing can just be replaced. This was before the patent expired i guess. once there were aftermarket and merc lost their stranglehold on this part they recommended changing everything but said to face the slots inward so the cust .could not just change the bearing without pulling it first.once pulled the tolerance ring is junk.then if the cust installed it with the slots facing aft still using the old ring and it jammed up the tolerance ring could turn and start making noise and causing damage.
BUT you must remember to locate the hole in the bearing with the slot or you can`t grease the bearing no matter how it was installed.
