Default Carburetor rebuild kit for vintage Evinrude fastwin 15

I have what I believe is a 1953 Evinrude Fastwin 15hp (serial #15012-42814). I have a parts manual for it that has been immensely helpful. I have found the impellar, and a new glass bowl for the carburetor. I cannot however find a complete carburetor rebuild kit and the parts manual only list all the items as individual items which I have not had luck locating. Does anyone know where I could find the correct part number for a carburetor rebuild kit for this motor? Also, is there anything else I should consider replacing while I'm at it? This motor was up and running not more than a few months ago when the glass fuel bowl split and I had to find a new one. I would like to rebuild the carburetor because the fast and slow speed knobs would wobble loose and require me to constantly adjust them to keep her running right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hmmmm. Good questions. I thought the early 15's would be easy to get parts for. I looked here: vintageoutboard.com and they only have the 55 & 56 15hp listed, but not the earlier ones. At this point I would use the parts manual and see what was different on the carb from the 55/56 ones.

Have you tried tightening the packing nuts under the cowl? that will stop your knobs from turning too easy if your packing washers aren't too bad. If it were me I'd make my own packing washers out of some gasket material from an auto parts store. I like to use a single hole punch for the valve hole.

that would work and I hear you can also just buy a pack on packing nuts (which are a gasket type material) at the dealer or thru Sierra

The 1955-1960 era small Evinrude and johnsons 3-18hp all use the same carburetor kits. Sometime in the 1960's they started going to fixed high speed jets and they still used the same kits, minus the high speed jet packings. They didn't change basic design until the 1970's (some models). So, just pick one at random and you will be OK. Say a 1958 18hp for instance. Or a 1957 3hp.

But do they cover pre '55 as his is a '53. I wasn't sure about that, that's why I said to check part #'s. I would have though they were the same but vintage outboards has them listed differently.

ok, I just looked at the carb body #'s and they are the same for the 15012 and a '55 model, part # 376147. I did not compare any other parts but if the carb body is the same then the kits must be the same would be my guess. I'd pick up a later kit then.

http://www.laingsoutboards.com/newpa...20and%20others according to this site the 53 takes the same kit as many others Sierra part 18-7043 also available at NAPA does not come with a float. The OEM one from a dealer will have a float.

Awesome, thank you guys! That was my dilemna, anyone I called simply told me their manuals stopped at '55 and they couldn't help me. I will order a later model kit. I also liked the gasket material idea for the mixture knobs. I'll give that a try. Can anyone shed some light on the impeller replacement procedure for this old motor? Is it like the old 7.5's that requires you to remove the powerhead or is there an easier way?

See if there's an oval side cover about 2inches long with 2 screws in the middle of the leg on the starboard side. If so, take that cover off and you can disconnect the shift linkage there instead of removing the powerhead. If not, you're probably out of luck and will have to remove the powerhead. I've never worked on that year so I'm not sure. You can bet someone else will know, though.
Good luck,
JBJ

you need to remove the power head but it's very simple to do. About 7-8 screws and it lifts right off. A 3/8 wrench to remove the shift rod and four bolts to drop the lu. I would rather do one of those than the other. I seem to have better luck.

If your motor has this square plate on the lower leg then you don't have to remove the power head.[IMG][/IMG]

All excellent advice as usual.

15012-42814 is a 1954. Same as the 1953 except for the decals.

I can't say much about the carb kit that FR hasn't already. The kit is common to pretty much all small OMC's into the 1960's. Part number is BRP 439071 or Sierra 18-7043. However, like JBJ suggests if its just loose jets and tightening the nuts doesn't help then add some packing or an o-ring to each jet until such time as you must rebuild the carb.

The shift linkage is where cc67 shows on his 1953-54 Fastwin. You do not have to remove the powerhead. That is only for the 5.5 - 7.5 hp. However, those motors have a common problem with the lower crankcase seal and some suggest you replace them or at least inspect it, which requires removal of the powerhead.

If you're going to go to all the trouble to inspect it though, I'd replace it!

Thanks again guys, I seem to have misplaced the glass float bowl I bought (just finished moving and I have no idea which box it's in ), so I just bought another on Ebay. I appreciate all the help and advice, I'll have to post up pics as soon as I get her running.
