20 HP Mercury water pump

How do I unhook the shift rod shaft, to get the lower end off to change the water pump? It has the reverse and forward built in to the throttle handle.I 's a 1996.I bought it cheap ,got the motor running sweet but she needs the pump re-built.

There a pin (clip) under the carb port side

It has an electric starter on that side.Do I have to take it off to access it?

Thank you Laddies.Missoin accmoplished ! The impellers was in 3 peices.I put her back togeather and she running like new. Thanks again!
