Default Paint Mid and lower leg unit on a 1989 Evinrude 88 SPL model# E88MSLCER.

Hello everyone,
I am getting my boat ready for a great boating season, I hope, this year. I was wanting to ask you professional's on here where and how and what you do to paint your mid and lower leg units on your boats. My mid and lower leg unit is looking rough paint wise and I want to pretty her up before I put the boat in for the first time this season. Where do you guys go to buy your paint, what type of paint for the do it your selfer, how do you paint it. I was thinking using Krylon indoor/outdoor paint but I don't know how it will hold up under the water and when it is moving threw the water. Basically I don't want to sink alot of moeny painting it but I fill I can paint it pretty well myself using a spray can myself. Ops! I forgot I have a 1989 Evinrude 88SPL model# E88MSLCER outboard. Thanks, Bob

Your local OMC dealer sells the proper primer and paint in the color you need. I would use that rather than Krylon, etc. It is formulated for marine use.

Any auto store,Autozone-Advance auto ect have a pretty good paint section and it is good automotive type paint that holds up really well.
Just pick a can that is closest to you engine color.
The key is,clean, clean, clean, make sure you get all the grease and lake scum off, scuff it up with some light sand papar and wipe it down with some laquer thinner or even alcohol before you paint it.
Should look great and you are only in for 10-15 bucks.
I would stay away from Krylon though.

Dealer paint or Tempo brand Engine paint and zinc chromate primer work the best.Auto paint usually peels off..Duplicolor paint does not hold up well at all under water..

Do some sanding with fine-grit, wet-dry paper everywhere you want new paint. Then clean it off with solvent, wash/rinse, dry with tack-free rags...then apply the primer as per instructions. Pay attention to something called open time...the window of time, or lack of, that you need to observe to follow up with the color paint. It's hard to beat self-etching primers as they can be colored/painted as soon as the primer drys...no sanding needed.
