Default mariner pee hole not peeing

I have a 40hp mariner tiller that worked fine for the last two seasons, but I put it up for the winter, it was covered all winter, and now the pee hole doesn't seem to spit any water. There should always be water coming out of there right? there is water coming out of the exhaust holes below the cowl, but no water flowing out of the actual pee hole. I ran the boat for a couple of minutes, even at full throttle for a while, but it didn't seem to get hot to the touch. What could my problem be, I mean what could have happened while it was just sitting? Could the tell tale be plugged, could the tstat be bad? The hole for the tell tale is drilled into the bottom end of the water compartment, which tells me that possibly there is no water getting to my motor since nothing is coming out of the pee hole. Just looking for some ideas, thanks. I really like this motor and dont want to get into the rush of spring fishing here in iowa and ruin a motor.

Run the engine and take a peice of wire or weedwacker cable and try to rod the telleate out or blow it out when running if you stillget no water you need to ck the impeller

wouldn't the water coming out of the exhaust holes tell me the impeller is working?

Yes, the water coming out of the exhaust is a good indication that the pump is working as far as thermostat and the rest of it you neglected to tell us the year or model or serial number, so it's hard to tell.

if running a weedeater string dont work, you can do what i did, if you have a compressor, start engine and blow air up the tell tale hole and that should do it, i had to take the hose loose from the block and found a mud dobers had started a nest there cleaned it, started and used compressed air, it worked,

Hey, had the same problem about a week ago. there are several problems you could have. first try clearing the tube with weedeater string, if it all seems clear, you could have a stuck thermostat or (poppet vavle) if your model has one. Also, just because there is water coming out of the lower unit tell-tale doesnt mean that your impeller is completely fine it could be in tact enough to pump but damaged enough not to be putting enough pressure up to the head, water pumps generally will go bad when stored especially in winter months and generally require replacing every two to three years.
After i replaced my water pump it would only pump out drips so i took my water hose and held it tight to the pee hole and put back pressure on it until i got water coming out of the suction holes, after i did that it worked great.

Just for the record, the motor is a mariner 40BM, and there are also these numbers on it: 676BS and 000449. I took the tell tale hose off and tried to blow air through it with my mouth, nothing. So I took a zip tie (only thing I could find in the back of the truck) and reamed it out, I did feel something hard that eventually broke free, I am guessing a bug or mud. Anyway, now I can blow air through it, and I am confident that was the problem, so I will find out tomorrow when I take her to the lake.
