I have a problem with my tilt on my 80 OMC stringer 400. Sometimes I have to hit it with a hammer (tilt motor) before it will raise. I am assuming I need a new tilt motor. I have been told it is easier accessed through the back of the boat by removing the boot. Am I asking for trouble here? It does not leak and I don't want make it start. What do you think?

I believe you will find the tilt pump on the port side of the motor. It will be down low at the transom area, It might be behind the exhaust elbow. I don't think you can get to it thru the transom opening.
