I am trying to trounleshoot this moror for a friend of mine. He said he hit a stump or something last summer and the motor just wing to a high rpm and the prop wont turn. I shifted it in reverse and it seems ok. Also, in neutral the prop has a sandy sound while turning. I have never tore down an outboard before but I said I would look into it for him. I am mechanically inclined, do you think I would be better telling him to take it to a specialist. What I mean is, is there special tools you have to use when reassembling? Thanks in advance!!

Get the service manual then open that gearcase, you may be looking at a forward gear and shift slider/engagement dogs.

Thats assuming that the prop hub is OK as he said that it still works in reverse.
