I'm downsizing this year and don't have much experience with smaller motors. I found a 1996 2 stroke 15 REDG Evinrude for my 11 ft whaler. After getting it home I noticed it losing cold water out the shift rod. I installed a #394711 pump kit with no change.
What temp should the head be idling on ear muffs? Teltale stream looks good but the head feels hot. Thermocouple reads 160f. Are the tsats a higher temp than the v6? Thanks MartyD

Checked water tube align with some blue pipe dope, sits nicely, in deep.
Found a clogged drain hole near the shift rod, cleaned out the mud and shells.
I clamped the lower to a bench, put the muffs on, and turned the drive shaft with a drill. The pump lost water from two areas, rear of housing,i guess that cools exhaust.
Also lost water from the side of the housing, prrobably to cool top seal.
I'll reassemble tomorrow and see if the head still runs hot. MartyD

Well, like I say, I don't have a lot of small outboard experience but,I have worked on electric motors and pumps. Seals need cooling and lurication. If you look at the 3rd picture in my second post, you will see a factory hole in the water pump housing above the impeller, and below the shaft seal. Any bypass will drain from this hole, I guess they want the top seal cooled and lubricated by the water. I've looked at dozens of photos of 9 and 15hp OMCs and they all have that hole in the front left side of the lower. I replaced the tstat and bypass decreased . Thanks MartyD
