Arrow 1987 Evinrude 90 HP , How to check trigger and VRO pump?

Can anyone tell me what wires to check on a 1987 90 HP evinrude to test the Trigger and the powerpacks along with readings and also how to test the VRO pump. The books I have do not give the correct color wires for the ignition . Any info is greatly appreciated.

Here are my symptoms, I installed a new powerhead and it starts just fine and seems to have an intermittent cough like the timing is out of wack, when starting it , the motor turns over fine for a couple revolutions and all of a sudden it turns over hard for a short period of time then it cranks over easy again and it will start. When it is running it will run fine for just a couple seconds then it will cough and almost die out. I would like to further test the ignition but I did notice the stator had a crack in it so I replaced it ,that wasnt the problem. Im thinking it could be the flywheel or powerpacks but Im unsure

Thanks,
Stew

Well thanks for the help I think I figured it out, the little clips that hold the timer base into place were missing so the timer gap was way off and barely rubbing on the inside flywheel magnet.
