Smile 1983 Mariner 150hp Carb.

I just bought a 150 hp Mariner outboard motor 3 months ago from my boss. The original owner left it at my boss's property and never came back for it since 2002. I did a compression test and all 6 cylinders had a compression of 115-120 psi before I bought it. I rigged the motor last weekend onto my bass boat. I'm planning to rebuild the three carburetors myself, by looking at the carbs this weekend, I notice all three carbs has purple paint/ink around the nuts and bolts, is this a sign that it has been rebuilt by a shop, or dose it come with the ink from the manufacture. I could save myself some money and time if it was rebuilt. How hard is to rebuild theses carbs, I have never done it before? Thanks

I don't know the meaning of the purple paint, but I don't think it makes any difference what it means. If the motor has been sitting unused for as long as you say, then you need to clean the carbs anyway. In addition, there are other maintenance tasks you should do before running the motor. If you don't, you risk damaging the motor. The below FAQ does a very good job of describing what to do.

The purple/pink is probably what's left after leaking gas has evaporated over time in storage.

That engine could have foam floats in the carbs. In that case, it'd be worth while to acquire another set of similar carbs. (probably WH series) from a slightly newer engine to get the hard plastic floats. Saves a world of hurt in the long run.

hope it helps
