3.5 merc 1986 prop shaft clutch slipping

Does anybody know if you can adjust the clutch by tightening the nut on the front of the prop shaft?. Or the torque spec for it? The prop hub is not slipping and gears look perfect but sometimes when you give it throttle it acts as though the prop had spun. But it hasn't. This is the model with forward and neutral only and has this spring loaded clutch thing that is baffling me. All parts look fine , virtually no wear, very low hours and freshwater only.
HELP!
