Yamaha digital tach - motor won't start - Help!

My fishing partner just got a new VMax 150 put on his old boat which has the Yamaha digital gauges. His first trip out for break-in was fine. When he got home he was tying up some loose wires under his dash and said he must have bumped something and blew a fuse. However after checking everything out he cannot find any blown fuses. Right now his digital tach will not work and his motor will turnover but not fire. His other gauges work OK. He has spent many hours tracing wires and trouble shooting connections with no luck. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

Howdy, Alabass.

Welcome to iboats. :)

My guess is that he inadvertently grounded the ignition through the tach or pulled the kill switch, which disables the ignition.

Go to Engine FAQs, "Outboard won't start" and do the troubleshooting. It may not show you what is wrong, but it will eliminate several possibilities.

If that does no good, disconnect the tach completely and go to the wiring diagram in the Service Manual.

No Service Manual? Thought so. Have him get one. As well as showing him which wires go where it will caution him to never work on the electrical stuff with the battery connected.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
