Default 80's 17 Montauk vs 17 Outrage

I been saving for a late 70's early 80's Montauk. I used to use one in the SF Bay when I was studying Marine Biology at SFSU. I fell in love with the workability and stability of that Whaler. I was late 70's and not a Brunswick so it was probably a Katama I used, but I've always like the balance of wood and fiberglass on the Montauk.

My brother got a hold of a 80's 17' Outrage that his friend had stripped the motor off. It is just a hull and galvanized, dually trailer. He wants $3K for it and will add an 80's Johnnyrude 115 for another $1K. The hull, console and trailer are in good shape.
  1. 1) What is the difference between a 17' Montauk and 17' Outrage?
  2. 2) How expensive would it be to add stearing, throttle and other controls
  3. 3) Does this deal make any sense?
  4. 4) Is the 1980' Johnnyrude 115 worth a $1K?

I have a 1993 17' Outrage. The Outrage has a hull that is not as flat as that of a Montauk therefore the ride is not as rough in chop and it's a 'dryer' ride. The Outrage also has a built in tank under the deck. Make sure the tank doesn't leak, mine did and it cost me about $600 until I replaced it and the hoses.

If the boat and motor are in good sound condition and you're able to do any repairs yourself I'd give serious consideration to the package you describe. Be sure to test drive the boat or at least make certain the motor runs OK. Pay to have a compression check done!

I am interest in seeing this deeper hull. Is the Outrage 17 much heavier then the Montauk?

It ended up being a 87' Outrage 18'. I bought it. It has all the appeal and design of a Montauk with a little more wood. I love the wood look.

I have had a season on her now and she is all that I wanted. I have spent this winter setting her up for trolling. This summer she'll be rigged again for water skiing/tubing.
