i have ripped out the carpet from my Xpress Bass Boat. i am looking for the right product to put down for a non-slip paint. I have found this product ( http://shop.nonskidpaint.com/product...=2&productId=3 ) but there is no information on if it will work on the aluminum decking of my boat. I called a friend who does auto body and paint work and he suggested i put down a "self-etching primer" before the non-slip paint. can anyone give any other suggestions?
i have scraped off 70% of the glue from the floor and then used a belt sander to sand down the rest. some of the glue is still on the decking but is sanded down.

I ran over to the Cabelas by my house and picked up their tuff coat paint. After sanding down the entire inside of the boat, i opened the paint to start rolling it on and there was a large lump of stuff in the middle of the can. I think its the non skid stuff or something because it was a brick clumped together. I tried to stir it a break it loose and it wouldn't. I'm bringing it back to them today and gonna try to get a new can that isn't as old. But now i have to wait until next weekend to do the painting.
Yep, sounds old. I'm very interested in how this does for you. I got couple swatches of Durabak and today a couple of Tuffcoat swatches just arrived in my mail. (gray and light gray)
Slight differences in feel. The Durabak was coating a piece of plastic. The Tuffcoat came in a small square by itself, not coated on anything. Tuffcoat feels more rubberlike, but the plastic-backed Durabak is completely flexible too. So I tend to think that if the Tuffcoat was presented the same way it would be the same. One difference I read online was how long you can keep it after opening. Tuffcoat says about a year. Durabak says you have to use the entire container because it's air that begins to cure it and once the can is opened, it's doesn't have a shelflife. That will steer me in the direction you're going....Tuffcoat.

I will give you guys an update this weekend. I tested the tuff coat in 3 spots on the boat (without priming). In 1 hour the TuffCoat was dry. It was solid and it looked good. I picked up my new gallon of Tuffcoat from Cabelas last night so i will be painting the boat this weekend. I will try to remember to get before and after pictures.
Quick question:
i have sanded all of the glue off to the bare aluminium. The boat is sitting all week until this weekend, when i will have the time to finish. i was told i need to wipe down all of the aluminum before painting because of oxidation. Is this correct? do i need to get some acetone to wipe down the painting surface?
i forgot the digital camera this past weekend. i will be going back this next saturday to finish up with the boat. The TuffStuff looks 100 times better than i had ever expected. it does require 2 coats. I need to pick up another quart just for touchups.
i will be rerunning most of the wiring for the boat this weekend coming. i was not satisfied with the way the wiring looked once i pulled up the carpet and the side panels where the wires were running under. i have some before pics from when i had gotten the boat and i will post the after pics once i am done.
Cabelas should also have the self-etching primer that you need to use when putting that stuff on aluminum. My dad redid his aluminum deck with the same stuff (except it came from Basspro) and didn't use the primer. It seems like it is real tough after it dries, but within a couple months it started peeling off in spots. He ended up sanding it all off, using the primer and re-doing it. That was 2 years ago and it still looks good as new.

Go to their website and request a swatch of a color of your choosing. I got a couple of them. They didn't put it on any material, but just sent a swatch of the stuff itself, as if they put it on something that they could easily remove it from to mail. But it's completely flexible and it's not hard like you would think. It's rubbery I guess you could say. Request a sample from them.
i did not use the primer, Cabelas said there was no need for the primer, but i talked to an auto body and paint guy and he said to make sure it was scratched up so it would stick.
i was able to peel the stuff right off of the paint bucket i used, but the bucket was smooth. The stuff stuck like hell to the paint mixer that i had attached to the drill. i had to use one of the wire wheels to get it off. when it was peeled off, it felt like a mixture of latex and rubber.
i wire wheeled the entire boat and it seems very durable. If it peels then i will buy it by quarts over a period of time and do little at a time. It was a real pain to do all the decking of the boat.
i put down Herculiner in the bottom of my 14 foot boat. its basically the same stuff, kinda rubbery feeling. i put it down one time and didnt take the time to clean the aluminum and it all came up. then i grinded the whole floor and it is sticking alot better. i think you will be happy with the Tuffcoat.

Excellent! As you can tell I'm very interested in how this product turns out. From what I can visualize from the samples they sent me, it's sounds like it's an excellent look.
