Hi there, just picked up a 94 evinrude 8hp and noticed it's leaking gear lube from what I think is the water inlet when the motor is stored horizontally.
I have a manual on order but I was wondering if anyone would know what seal would be leaking to cause this?
Also, it a long shaft. If I wanted to covert it to a regular shaft is it as simple as removing the 5" extension?

That's the water intake. if you've got gear oil coming from there the drive shaft seals, below the water pump must be in a bad way. (You expect black burnt oil from the water outlet ) When you drop the lower unit break the joint above the extension, clean any crud off the drive shaft then remove the extension from the LU. If you break the joint below the Lu and there is any crud on the shaft it wont slide through the bushing in the extension and if you are unlucky it pulls out of the gear-case and the water pump and the impeller key smashes the impeller housing on the way!
You'll renew the pump impeller as well. might as well do the prop shaft seals and replace the O ring round the gear shift rod
Also check that there is no restriction to the water flow going up the water tube. Not sure if it is the same as my earlier 6hp but the recurring trouble with that is the grommet at the top gets squeezed over the top of the tube until it cuts off the water flow!
If you really want to convert it to a standard shaft you'll need a standard length drive shaft. a standard length gear shift rod (Although a machine shop could shorten the existing one) and you'll need a short water tube ( again the existing one could be shortened easily)
It will help to get my on the right track once my manual arrives.

The oil was like brand new. Not a drop of water in it.
Just wondering how oil can leak out but water didn't leak in?
