Default Zodiac f470 transom repair

I have a military surplus FC470 that appears to have some wood rot at the lower portion of the transom. Probing the area confirmed that the entire width of the transom was not rotted. It looks like there is just some surface rot in about a 6" area with good wood underneath? Anyone have any suggestions for repair? My first thought was to remove all the rotted area down to where there is good wood, then patch with a high strength wood or synthetic filler. Any help you give is greatly appreciated!
