I just purchased a Fisher 14' aluminum boat with a 2003 25hp Mercury Model# 25EL

Same as pictured at this link:

I have not taken out on the water yet but having been doing some maintenance such as:

New Plugs
New Prop
Changed lower gear oil.

My question is on the cooling. How does it work?

When I throw the muffs on and started her up after I bought it she had a steady stream of water shooting from the telltale.

Soemone told me the water should come out through the prop as well? If so it does not.

The other day I started it with the muffs but the teltale was not a steady stream it was more like spurting out and after a few minutes some smoke(heat) was coming out the telltale.

I start it today and the teltale is a steady stream again. I removed the Prop and can stick my finger in the whole where the exhaust is coming out but theres no water.

How should the cooling work and do you think there may be a problem?

Thanks

It is always a good idea when you don't have maintance records with a engine to repace the w/pump. It should have a good stream at the telltale when warm and no exhaust or steam, however if the hose did not have enough volume it could act as you describe. When connected to a hose without the engine running if you have water out the telltale you for sure have a bad impeller and when running the water should show a increase of pressure when you increase the RPM, never run a engine on a hose over 2000 RPM

Should the water come out the propeller when you have it running on the muffs?

Where else does the water come out of other than the teltale?

The ad for the motor said new water pump and when I look at it the guy said it had a new water pump and he always changed it every year.

By the way what happened Mercurypartsexpress.com Sites been down?

I would like to see if this engine has a thermastat.

Yes the engine should have water coming out of the prop about 90% of cooling water goes out the exhaust. BAM Marine site has very good parts manuals for all Mercury products.

If it has a thermastat would that not allow water to shoot out the exhaust untill it was hot enough? IF not what would cause the teltale to stream but no water out the exaust (prop)

I ran it for approx 6 minutes, had the telltale streaming but no water out of the prop.
