Teleflex QCII steering- pin installation??

I just installed a new Teleflex steering QC II replacement cable in my boat. There is a pin that is supposed to hook up somewhere where the cable feeds through the helm. I cannot see under my dash (I have a lowe roughneck and the geniuses who built the boat welded the dash in so I have to work blindly) to see the helm to make sure the pin is installed correctly. Does it serve a purpose? The steering works fine and the cable feels secured to the helm. I have the pin currently installed in the slot on the helm converter but it just fits losely in there and didn't snap in or anything (I have the quick connect converter). I am concerned my pin is not properly seated and this may be a safety issue. Any ideas or feedback?

The pin is a secondary safety device to make sure the cable does not unwind itself from the helm.

I would find a way to put it in.

if you are using the safe t helm, that snaps when it goes in,..the pin is to release the cable for servicing or replacement.
