Default cable length, old Evinrude 2 lever controls?

How do I measure the slack/extra from the gunwale to the engine for an old (1960) Evinrude that takes the old, dual handle controls and cables?

I don't have the old cables to compare, so that's no help. I measured from the back of where the control box mounts to the rear of the transom and it's 10'.

Boat is 5' wide at the stern, so 30" to the centerline of the engine.

How much slack do I need to make the S turns to get around to the front of the engine and over to the throttle (since that's longer)?

I'm looking on eBay for a control box and cable combo, but don't know how long I need the cables.

Thanks,

Rich

Use something semi-rigid such as a piece of nylon tubing and lay it in the boat following the cable route. Then measure the tubing. It is better not to do the S-turn route. Go past the motor, and make a generous loop back to it. Then the loop rolls as you steer back and forth instead of pulling on an S and causing binding.

teleflex, says control to transom. then center of transom. plus 4 feet. round up to next foot. 10+ 2.5+ 4= 16.5 round up to 17 ft. if you loop like F-R recommends, i would add more footage.

Whatever length you come up with, TD's example is how you measure, add an extra foot...you'll be glad you did. The iboats mall/store has your cables. I got mine through an outfit called Wholesale Marine in the Carolinas...very nice service from either outfit.

Terrific. I got a box, but need cables AND the ends. I believe the cables are the same.

My understanding is the shifter end has no adjustment, it's adjusted at the control box, and the throttle end has an adjustment, and a spring loaded pin that goes into the shifter.

And the Throttle one has a hold, with a stainless steel "clamp"/cover that olds it on the throttle pivot pin itself.

Are there names/part numbers/how to identify these ends?

And where is good (meaning most inexpensive) place to get 'em? eBay?

The auction site is one option. The other is the free classifieds at www.aomci.org. Send me a PM and I'll email you a photo showing how they hook up. Just did this with two 57 Johnson 18 hp twins on an old Texas Maid aluminum boat. Make sure the control box has its ends and that any ends/tips you buy have both screws and brass barrel they screw into...insist on a good photo in other words.
