Impeller On a Force 50

I have a 1986 force 50 that im restoring. I had put a new impeller, i have it in a trashcan full of water and been starting it once in a while fixing little things here and there.. well the impeller stopped pumping water. i took it down yesterday and all the blades were gone. well i put in a new one started it, everything was fine. started it again, it like hickuped and has a hard time starting and its not pumping water. I think the impeller is gone again (will take the lower leg down again maybe after christmas)... is there something special i need to do to install the impeller?

Were the blades gone no pieces floating around?
I don't trust the muffs.
Use a good big trash can at least 40 gallon.Get the motor as deep as possible.
Full can right up against the mount.
