How often should the waterpump or impeller be changed? The last time mine was changed was right before I bought the boat. I have owned it for about six years now. Any suggestions are welcome and thank you in advance.
I would say you are due. Most agree that every 2 to 3 years is standard, depending of course on hours used and the conditions that the outboard is used in. It is a fairly inexpensive part as you know, and can be changed in under an hour. Its failure is catastrophic. Personally, I change mine every second season, along with the t stats. I like having the peace of mind, plus I know the price of replacement power heads.
I would change the impeller as a precaution. Be aware when ordering that you need the correct impeller. The ones for the newer models do not have the same key and slot that yours does. They were changed with the 1979 - 1980 models.
I also have the same outboard engine. 1978 evinrude 115 model #115899. Problem is I can't find a water impeller replacement kit for this engine anywhere. Any suggestions?
