Lower Unit Removal

Recently bought this boat with a 1978 Evinrude 85 HP. Boat had
been setting for about a year according to the seller. Thought I
should change the water pump impeller.
Using one of the manuals on a CD, I am trying to remove the lower unit.
It is hanging up on the gears. Shift lever bolts are off and lever is free.
Unit will slide out about two inches and bind up.
What am I missing here? Any help would be appreciated.

If you are sure the shift rod is disconnected then its possible the splines on the drive shaft is binding or rusted. It may just need a good whack to get it loose.

Total of seven bolts removed from the bottom.

Two bolts on each side.

One bolt above the propeller.

Another bolt hidden above the trim tab so the trim tab and its bolt have to be removed first.

The release for the shift rod is centered below the carburetors; the clevis screw can be reached from the starboard side and must be removed.

If it really is sliding down two inches, the bolts are obviously all out and the driveshaft splines are not stuck. Even the shift rod wouldn't let it come down two inches.

how hard are you pulling...the shift rod has a crook in the top that has to come through the bushing........maybe just tug on it with a little more authority............

Re: Lower Unit Removal

My problem is the shift is not loose, my CD states to take the lever
loose where the cable pulls the arm back and forth, I have done this.
Taking the shift rod loose in the middle under the carbs is where the
problem lies. I don't see anyway to disconnect the linkage here. I guess
maybe I could take the carbs off and be able to see this, I don't know.
There is not a pin or a screw on this linkage that I can see. I can work
the lever and see this connection in the middle of the motor but I cannot
find a way to get it loose.
