Default 60 Evinrude 40hp, gear case parts

The BRP drawing shows detent and balls (items 59 and 60) above the middle of the prop shaft. I opened my gear case and I don't see these parts. Is the 1960 model supposed to have them too?

No, that feature wasn't implemented until a later year.

However, you can update it. Requires drilling a hole in the prop shaft. You should take the shaft to a machine shop for that and have it drilled in a Bridgeport. It is surprisingly difficult to drill.

It is well worth the modification.

As I understand it holds the clutch dog in place. Is there a problem with this motor slipping out of gear? I haven't used this motor yet so I don't know how well it works.

It is to make the dog tend to "snap" into gear and go all the way. It won't hold a worn-out dog engaged.
